Theory Legends student workbooks cover

Copy editor and formatting coach for the Theory Legends student workbooks. These are highly creative guides that prepare students for state music theory exams in Virginia. I collaborated on a style guide and wrote separate editorial notes for the author, as all was presented to me in PDF form (written in and imported from InDesign) and densely illustrated.

—Lauren McEwen (independent author)

Hard Copy Proofreading

Hard copy proofreading (markup on printed galley proof) is done after the copyedit and before the manuscript is laid out in publication format. Only editors and publishers are expected to know what these marks and symbols mean. Many traditional publishers still ask proofreaders to make hard copy markups such as my sample below:

Note: Works in their published form reflect the final decisions of authors and publishers. As an editor, I provide recommendations to enhance clarity, coherence, and correctness, but final choices regarding content remain with the creator and publishing team.
